United Front People's Convention Memphis 1991
Multi-Awarding Winning • Best Documentary
The chronicling of the 1991 Peoples Convention movement highlights riveting twists and turns of racist southern politics, stealing, betrayal, vicious attacks, lawsuits and blackballing as the black Memphis city leaders came together to unanimously select a single black mayoral candidate to run against the white regime. This was deemed an impossible feat by whites and blacks. This documentary documents the entire process and how Memphis was able to elect its first black Mayor, in what was one of the most iconic cities in civil rights history.
Produced in association with Executive Producer, Tripp Morrow and Sixteen Bars Entertainment, the documentary features commentaries from former Memphis mayor Herenton, former city councilman, Shep Wilbun, Rev. Dr. Bill Atkins, State Representative, Barbara Cooper, political statistician, Del Gill and live footage from the 1992 "Leadership Summit" hosted by former U.S. Congressman, Harold E. Ford that led to the final selection of Herenton as the consensus African American candidate and a select group of Memphians who were a part of the convention organizers.
